Although this skinny, narrow mausoleum doesn’t stand out, an urban legend lurks inside. Peek through the door to find the sculpture of David Alleno—caretaker in Recoleta Cemetery from 1881 to 1910.
Like the caretakers of today, David had a certain sector which he maintained & apparently became obsessed over where his final resting place would be. Members of the Alleno family claim that David’s brother, Juan, had already purchased this plot for his family… perhaps that inspired David to be buried in Recoleta Cemetery as well. After saving over a lifetime, he was able to have a sculpture made of himself at work, complete with keys, broom & watering can:
Urban legend claims that when the sculpture arrived from Italy & was placed in the tomb, David was so eager to complete the project that he went home & committed suicide… knowing that he would soon rest in peace here. Family members attest to David’s suicide, but they have no further information since the stigma of taking your own life meant erasure from family history. Whether the motive is true or not, David Alleno is now locked in with the elite residents of Recoleta Cemetery:

Lamento contradecir la leyenda urbana que afirma del suicidio de David tio abuelo mio ya que David sufria de cancer y dejo de ser cuidador y de lo que heredo de su hermano Juan para poder disfrutar un poco de su vida y se dedico a viajar por Francia y el noryte de Italia. La escultura fur mandada hacer por mi abuelo Romulo Jose hermano menor con muchos años de diferencia y el unico en la familia que llego a tener estudios y fue Juez y en agradecimiento a sus hermanos primero mando hacer a Genoba al escultor Canepa el busto de su hermano mayor y el que compro la boveda (para que descasara su madre que tenia varios años de fallecida y la compra fue en 1889) y luego la de David que fu sacada de una fotografia que yo la vi en la casa de mi abuela. Hola Eduardo – Gracias por demistificar lo que pasó con David. Marcelo y yo intentamos de buscar la verdad atras de cada leyenda urbana que existe en el cementerio… sobre todo porque la verdad es mucho mas interesante que una historia inventada.
Lo que nos encantaría tener—en lo posible—es una copia de la foto de David que mencionaste para subir aca en el blog. Asi que terminamos con las mentiras. Obvio si tenes mas datos sobre la vida de David (cuanto tiempo llevó trabajando en el cementerio, cuando empezaron a inventar su suicidio, etc) tambien podemos agregar esa informacion al post.
